Installing LED downlights is no more difficult than with previous lighting technology solutions.
However, there are some considerations that will be the key to a successful solution.
You may be replacing older downlights that are less energy efficient and expensive to maintain or it may be a new installation where you are installing LED solutions for the first time.
For both these jobs, you will need the help of a professional electrician and possibly the help of a lighting designer. The electrician should be approved by the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting. Check the electrician has this approval.
A new circuit requires building regulations approval. Extending or altering an existing circuit does not.
Using a lighting designer can save time, money and achieve a better and more original result. Often, the lighting manufacturer or supplier can offer help. Sometimes, the electrician may have experience and may be able to advise on a suitable layout or if you need fire rated LED downlights or higher IP rated product for a bathroom or other installation to comply with regulations.
Installing LED downlights can be a practical and efficient lighting solution for nearly all spaces in a home. There are two significantly different methods to consider:
A downlight that accepts an LED bulb solution;
A downlight with integral LED solution and no bulb to replace
The integral type of solution has the advantage of no bulb to replace, will have a longer life and may also be considerably brighter than a bulb type solution. This may mean using fewer downlights to achieve a level of illumination where using LED bulbs would require a greater number of downlights.
BB Light Ltd, a manufacturer of both types of LED downlight solution, can offer the key advice required to enable a practical and cost effective solution.
